Every potential vessel donation is carefully evaluated by Chapman’s dedicated team to determine the best path forward.
Independent Appraisal
The vessel owner selects a qualified, independent appraiser to determine fair market value. Chapman is not involved in the selection of the appraiser or the valuation itself. Your yacht broker may assist in coordinating this step.
Survey and Evaluation
Chapman conducts a separate survey to assess the vessel’s condition and determine whether it is best suited for direct sale or inclusion in our Donate to Lease Program.
• Chapman invests in preparing and improving the vessel
• The vessel may be placed into Chapman’s Lease to Purchase training fleet
• Appraised value is generally used as the basis for the donor’s tax benefit
• The vessel directly supports hands-on maritime education before placement
Closing and Documentation
Chapman prepares all required documentation, including deeds of gift and IRS Forms 8283 and 1098 C. Donors should consult with their tax and financial advisors to determine whether vessel donation is the right option for their individual situation.
