In two weeks of hands-on training at our Stuart, Florida campus, you’ll work on real engines, electrical and fuel systems, and boats on the water, guided by instructors who’ve spent their careers in the trade.
No experience required. You’ll earn a nationally recognized ABYC Marine Service Technician Certificate and leave with a clear sense of which part of the industry fits you — without committing to a longer program first.

Why the Marine Industry?

Recreational boating keeps growing, and the marine industry needs skilled technicians faster than schools can train them. Boatyards, marinas, dealerships, and manufacturers all depend on people who understand how boats and their systems actually work. This program gives you a hands-on introduction to those systems and the ABYC standards used across the industry — a practical first step toward a career on the water.

You’ll also spend time on the water learning to handle boats, not just service them. It’s an ideal starting point if you’re new to the marine trades and want to build practical skills fast.

Course Description

    The Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology course is a two-week, 70-hour, in-person program built for people who want to break into the marine industry but don’t yet have experience — or who aren’t sure which part of it fits them best.

    Over ten days at our Stuart, Florida campus, you’ll get hands-on with the systems that keep boats running: engines, electrical, fuel, drive systems, plumbing, and more — all guided by ABYC’s nationally recognized standards. You’ll also learn to handle boats on the water.

    By the end, you’ll have a working foundation across several marine trades and a clearer sense of where you want to go next: an entry-level job at a boatyard, marina, or dealership, or continuing into one of Chapman’s advanced programs like Yamaha Marine Maintenance Certification, Professional Mariner Training, or Yacht & Small Craft Surveying.

     

    About the American Boat & Yacht Council

    Since 1954, the non-profit American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) has developed safety standards for boat design, construction, equipage, repair, and maintenance. The essential global source of marine industry technical information, ABYC’s product safety standards, credentialing, education, training, and other tools help members make boating safer. The ABYC Foundation supports the mission of the American Boat & Yacht Council, with a focus on workforce development and providing resources that create educational and lifelong career opportunities to both current and aspiring marine service technicians.

    For employers across the marine industry, ABYC credentials signal that a technician understands the standards used to build, service, and repair boats safely — which is exactly what boatyards and dealerships are looking for in new hires.

    • Registration Form completed and signed
    • Provision of official photo ID with registration
    • Payment of full tuition
    • Class requires a minimum number of Four (4) students
Tuition & Fees

    Tuition & Fees
    Tuition is $1,850 total and includes everything you need to take the course — books, tools, and lab fees. There are no hidden material costs.

    • Payment of full tuition is due with the completed and signed Registration Form and a copy of an Official Photo ID.
    • Tuition includes books, supplies, and laboratory fees.
    • Tuition does not include housing, board, or transportation.
    • All costs are payable in U.S. currency only.
    • The Chapman School accepts Discover, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
On-Campus Housing Starting at $80/Night

    Student Housing

    Description
    Campus housing consists of dormitory apartments. Each unit contains a bedroom, a convertible living room/bedroom, a bath, a kitchenette, and a covered porch. The number of students per unit during this program is a maximum of three. All units are air-conditioned, fully furnished, and equipped with a refrigerator, countertop range, and cooking utensils. Housing is offered on a space-available basis. The School is not responsible for the loss of any personal property. Sorry, no pets.

    Housing Fees: (Shared Rate)

    Housing Refunds

    • Housing Fees are due 30 days prior to the start of class.
    • If a student cannot attend the class in which he or she is registered, housing fees are refundable.
    • Once a student moves into the facilities, no fees will be refunded.
    • If a credit card was used as the original method of payment, a convenience fee of 3.0% of the total amount charged will apply for all refund transactions.
    • In the event any student does damage to the accommodations, he or she will be responsible for the replacement cost and labor required to repair the damaged Chapman School property.
    • Students must be at least 18 years old unless accompanied by an adult.
Certification

    Complete the course and pass the NOCTI exam, and you’ll walk away with credentials the marine industry recognizes:

    • ABYC Marine Service Technician Certificate.
    • Student membership to ABYC
    • Certificate of completion from the Chapman School of Seamanship for successful completion of the ABYC Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology Program.
    • Certification for the On-Water Training components of the program

Refund Policy
      • If the application for Registration is not accepted by the School, all payments made by the applicant will be refunded.
      • If cancellation is requested within three (3) business days after signing the Registration Form, all payments will be refunded in accordance with the buyer’s right to cancel.
      • If the School cancels the program due to insufficient student enrollment, I may be rescheduled to a future class, or all payments made will be refunded.
      • In the event that I am unable to attend the class for which I am registered the following change/ refund policy will apply:
        1. If cancellation is requested more than three (3) business days after signing the Registration Form but, before the beginning of classroom instruction, the applicant is obligated for the non-refundable Tuition.
        2. Where notice is provided to the School more than fourteen (14) days before the start of class, a student may transfer to another class (if available), upon payment of a $50.00 transfer fee.
        3. Where notice is provided to the School less than 14 days before the start of class to cancel, or if the applicant does not arrive for the scheduled class, or if the applicant wishes to withdraw from class once classes have begun, the applicant may be obligated for the full amount of the tuition.
      • If a credit card was used as the original method of payment, a convenience fee of 3.0% of the total amount refunded will apply for all transactions.
      • Applicable refunds are made within thirty (30) days.

      Other Travel Considerations

      If you are traveling to the School from outside of Florida we strongly suggest you purchase refundable airfares, or arrange trip cancellation insurance.
